Respiration is often confused with breathing, but they are fundamentally different. Breathing is the physical act of moving air into and out of the lungs. Respiration is a chemical process happening inside every cell of every living organism, around the clock. It releases the energy stored in food — specifically glucose — to power all life processes. Even when you are asleep, every cell in your body is respiring continuously.
