Forests are among the most important ecosystems on Earth. They cover about thirty percent of land but house eighty percent of all land-dwelling species. Forests are often called the lungs of the Earth because they absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen through photosynthesis. They regulate the water cycle — trees release water vapour through transpiration, attracting rain clouds. Their roots hold soil together, preventing erosion and flooding, and their leaf litter builds fertile soil. Forests also cool the surrounding air temperature.
