🌾 Farm to Table
Your food travels a long journey!🌱Farmseeds planted🌾Harvestcrops collected🏭Processcleaned & packed🚛Transportdelivered to shops🍽️Your plateenjoy! Many people work so food reaches your plate!

Next time you eat a bowl of rice or an apple, think about where it came from. Months ago, a farmer planted seeds in a field. They watered, weeded, and cared for the crop. When ready, it was harvested, transported to a factory, cleaned and packed, put on a truck, delivered to a shop, and finally brought home. Every meal involves dozens of people working across hundreds of kilometres.

What steps does food go through before reaching us?

  1. Planting — seeds sown in prepared soil
  2. Growing — plants cared for, watered, protected
  3. Harvesting — crops collected by hand or machine
  4. Processing — cleaned, sorted, packed at factories
  5. Transport — delivered to shops by refrigerated trucks
  6. Retail — sold at markets or supermarkets

What do crops need to grow?

Sunlight — for photosynthesis to make glucose (food for the plant)

Water — absorbed through roots; essential for all plant processes

Healthy soil — provides minerals, nutrients, and beneficial organisms

Frequently asked questions

Why should we not waste food?

Every kilogram of food wasted represents the land used to grow it, the water used to irrigate it, the energy used to transport it, and the hard work of farmers and workers involved. Food waste is a major environmental problem.

What is ploughing?

Ploughing is turning over the topsoil before planting to loosen it, improve drainage, and mix in organic matter. This gives seeds and roots better growing conditions.

Why is food transported in refrigerated trucks?

Many fresh foods (fruits, vegetables, dairy, meat) spoil quickly at room temperature. Refrigeration slows bacterial growth, keeping food safe and fresh during the journey from farm to shop.
