Groundwater is water that has seeped down through the soil and permeable rock and accumulated in underground layers called aquifers. The upper surface of this stored water is called the water table. When it rains, some water soaks into the ground and recharges the aquifer — this is called infiltration. Wells tap into this groundwater. However, in many parts of India and the world, groundwater is being extracted far faster than rainfall can recharge it, causing the water table to drop dangerously.
