A sewage treatment plant transforms dirty wastewater into water clean enough to be safely released into rivers or the sea. The process uses multiple stages, each targeting different types of contamination. Without treatment plants, our rivers, lakes, and coastal waters would be hopelessly polluted. Modern cities produce millions of litres of wastewater every day, and treatment plants must process this continuously. The treated water can even be reused for irrigation or industrial processes.
