In the twentieth century, chemists discovered how to make fibres entirely from chemicals — without any plants or animals. Nylon was the first fully synthetic fibre, invented in 1935, and was famously used for women's stockings. Today polyester is the most produced textile fibre in the world, making up more than half of all fabric. These synthetic fibres are stronger, cheaper, and more durable than most natural fibres — but they come with serious environmental costs.
