Deforestation is the large-scale removal of forests. The world currently loses forests at the equivalent of one football field every second. When forests disappear, so does everything that depended on them — plants, animals, insects, fungi, and the communities of people who lived there. The consequences extend far beyond the forest itself: flooding increases, rainfall decreases, soils erode, and atmospheric carbon dioxide rises, accelerating climate change.
