If acids taste sour, bases taste bitter — though you should never taste chemical substances to identify them. Bases feel slippery or soapy to the touch. Soap, baking soda, bleach, and antacid tablets are all bases. When you take an antacid for indigestion, the base in the tablet neutralises the excess hydrochloric acid in your stomach to relieve the burning sensation.
