Soil is not just dirt — it is a complex layered system called a soil profile. If you dug straight down, you would find distinct layers called horizons. The topmost layer contains decomposed organic matter called humus, teeming with life. Below that is the nutrient-rich topsoil where plants grow their roots. Deeper are layers of minerals, then weathered parent rock, and finally solid bedrock. Each horizon has its own colour, texture, and composition.
