A cyclone is a large rotating storm system that forms over warm tropical oceans and brings extreme winds, heavy rain, and dangerous storm surges. Wind speeds can reach two hundred to three hundred kilometres per hour. The centre of a cyclone — called the eye — is deceptively calm, with clear skies, but it is surrounded by the most violent winds. Cyclones are called hurricanes in the Atlantic Ocean and typhoons in the Pacific Ocean, but they are the same type of storm.
