Long before synthetic materials existed, humans learned to turn parts of plants and animals into fibres for clothing and rope. Cotton comes from the fluffy seed pods of the cotton plant. Jute fibres come from the stems of the jute plant. Wool is the soft fleece of sheep and other animals. Silk is spun by silkworms to form their cocoons. These natural fibres have been used for thousands of years and are still among the most widely used materials today.
