Soil erosion is the wearing away and removal of topsoil by water, wind, or human activity. When rain falls on bare soil, it washes the fine particles downhill into rivers and eventually the sea. Strong winds sweep dry, exposed soil away as dust storms. Since it takes a thousand years to form a single centimetre of topsoil, soil is effectively a non-renewable resource. Losing topsoil reduces agricultural productivity and can lead to desertification — the transformation of fertile land into desert.
