Plants have two specialised transport systems running throughout their bodies. Xylem transports water and dissolved minerals from the roots upward to the leaves and all other parts. It consists of hollow dead cells stacked end to end, forming continuous tubes. Phloem transports sugars produced by photosynthesis in the leaves to all other parts of the plant that need food. Unlike xylem, phloem can transport in both directions and consists of living cells.
