Conduction needs direct contact between solids. But heat can also travel in two other ways. Convection moves heat through liquids and gases by creating currents — hot fluid rises, cool fluid sinks, and a circular flow forms. Radiation sends heat as invisible electromagnetic waves that require no medium at all. The sun heats Earth across one hundred and fifty million kilometres of completely empty space — that is radiation in action.
