Some changes can be undone — ice melts into water, but freeze it again and you get ice back. Salt dissolves in water, but evaporate the water and you recover the salt. These are physical changes: the material's identity is unchanged, only its form, size, or state has altered. No new substance is formed. Physical changes are generally reversible, though some — like cutting paper — cannot be practically undone.
