Sanitation means having access to safe facilities for human waste disposal and maintaining clean hygiene conditions. About three point six billion people — nearly half the world's population — lack safely managed sanitation. Every year, around seven hundred thousand children under five die from diarrhoeal diseases caused by unsafe water and poor sanitation. Handwashing with soap alone could prevent two million deaths annually. Clean sanitation is not a luxury — it is one of the most powerful public health interventions in human history.
