In 1820, Danish scientist Hans Christian Oersted made a startling discovery: when he switched on an electric current near a compass, the needle swung sideways. He had discovered that electric current creates a magnetic field. This was revolutionary — before Oersted, electricity and magnetism were thought to be completely separate phenomena. Today we understand that they are two aspects of a single unified force called electromagnetism.
